JOB DESCRIPTION

MATHEMATICS TEACHER

Shawnigan Lake School is seeking a Mathematics Teacher to join our faculty in September 2019. The successful candidate will join a strong department that pushes students to develop confidence in their mathematical ability while linking student learning to real-world applications. Collaborating with other department members to foster student engagement through a demanding curriculum and experience with teaching high school mathematics up to grade 11 or 12 are requirements for this position.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The role of a teacher at Shawnigan Lake School is a vital one that requires not only individuals who are experts in their area of study, but who also bring a passion for learning and a love of working with youth. Because Shawnigan is a boarding school, teaching and learning does not only occur during the classroom day, but throughout the day, including evenings and weekends, and in all areas of interaction.

A Shawnigan teacher must fully embody the mission, vision and values of the School and consistently model these at all times. Reporting directly to both the Assistant Head – Academics and the Academic Department Head, a teacher at Shawnigan carries their assigned load of classes while meeting all of Shawnigan’s prep, planning, and reporting protocols as expected in the teaching profession. In addition to teaching to align with the BC Ministry of Education or Advanced Placement curriculum, teachers are expected to work collaboratively with fellow department members and across departments to design and deliver content that challenges our students and prepares them for their postsecondary endeavours. Availability outside of the classroom day to support students in their learning through tutorials or enrichment opportunities is expected.

Teachers are also expected to be involved in the full Shawnigan program outside of the classroom day in the following ways:

  • Provide extra-curricular instruction or coaching
  • Do duty in a dorm one evening each week, and every sixth Saturday
  • Academically mentor a roster of up to eight advisees
  • Do one Sunday full-school duty every two years
  • Participate in weekend programs and supervise field trips and tours
  • Be involved in school activities that occur on evenings or weekends
  • Participate in faculty and staff meetings
  • Engage in professional development by creating a Professional Growth Plan each year and seeking opportunities for professional development
  • Support fellow faculty with short-term coverage of classes to ensure that the delivery of content continues in a teacher’s absence
  • Attend Chapel services and gatherings on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays
  • Support of various school initiatives and other responsibilities, as assigned
