York House School, located in the heart of Vancouver, is one of Canada’s leading independent schools for girls. Founded in 1932 by seven progressive and insightful women, York House provides an outstanding education for approximately 650 girls from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12. 
Position Summary

We are inviting applications from Learning Strategies Teachers who have experience working closely with a team to provide a variety of supports for students, teachers and parents and who are committed to an inclusive approach to student success. Under the direction of the Director of Junior School, and working closely with the members of the Learning Strategies Department, this individual will ensure that all stakeholders have a good understanding of how best to support students in meeting their learning goals. A background in the role of a Learning Assistance/Resource Teacher in an Elementary School and teaching students with specific needs, including learning disabilities and giftedness is necessary.

This individual will meet the diverse behavioural, emotional needs and/or physical disabilities of students as well as research and apply computer technology for the classroom/assistive technologies as needed. This individual will also have opportunities to be involved in the co-curricular and extra-curricular activities that enhance students’ experiences at school.
Responsibilities and Experience

  • Collaborative and flexible, supportive and effective team player
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal, communication and collaborative skills and ability to develop strong professional relationships with all stakeholders
  • Experience co-planning with teachers to ensure students’ needs are being addressed and appropriate accommodations are applied effectively in the program and in assessments
  • Knowledge of methods for evaluating and selecting instructional materials suitable for students with a variety of special needs
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out a variety of assessments, including classroom observation, curriculum-based assessment and diagnostic teaching methods
  • Demonstrated experience with the administration and interpretation of standardized, norm-referenced assessment instruments to Level B
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of an IEP in consultation with classroom teachers, parents, students, and community resource personnel
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating sessions on how to help teachers meet students’ diverse needs in the classroom
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience with the BC Curriculum and pedagogical approaches such as differentiation, curriculum-based assessment and Understanding by Design
  • Experience coordinating services for students with outside practitioners (e.g., speech therapists, occupational therapists)
  • Committed to continuous professional growth and improvement 


  • Bachelor of Education
  • British Columbia Teachers certification or equivalent
  • Five years teaching experience is an asset
  • Knowledge of BC Special Education policies and guidelines, along with Special Education qualifications is an asset
  • Experience or training in coaching and modeling of teaching strategies an asset
  • French speaking is an asset
